Appearance and character
The appearance and character of Mohammad
The biographical tradition preserves detailed descriptions of how Mohammad looked and behaved. The best known comes from his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib. Muslims do not make images of the Prophet, so these word-portraits, rather than pictures, shape how he is remembered.
His appearance
According to the description attributed to Ali, Mohammad was of medium height — neither very tall nor short — and of strong, balanced build. He had a fair complexion with a reddish tinge, large dark eyes with long lashes, and slightly wavy black hair. He had broad shoulders and a dignified bearing.
When he walked, he leaned forward energetically, “as if descending a slope.” When he turned to look at something, he turned his whole body rather than just his head. Between his shoulders was a mark his followers called the Seal of Prophethood.
His character
The sources emphasize his character even more than his looks. He is described as the most generous of people, the bravest of heart, the most truthful in speech, and the most faithful to his promises. He was gentle in manner and kind in company.
Common questions
Are there any pictures of Mohammad?
No authentic images exist, and Islamic tradition discourages depicting the prophets to avoid idol-worship. Instead, Muslims rely on detailed written descriptions, like the one from Ali, to picture his appearance and remember his character.
Who described what Mohammad looked like?
The most famous description comes from his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib, who knew him closely. Several companions left similar accounts. Together these descriptions form a consistent word-portrait preserved in the biographical and hadith literature.
What was the Seal of Prophethood?
It was a mark between his shoulders described by those who saw him. In Islamic tradition it is understood as a physical sign of his status as the final prophet — the meaning behind his title “Seal of the Prophets.”
